What is
‘Slices of Fiction’?
Slices of Fiction is a solo exhibition by Deja Brown that reimagines iconic cakes from film and television as illustrated works. The show features 13+ illustrations inspired by memorable moments—like Matilda’s chocolate cake and Sleeping Beauty’s 16-layer cake failure—each interpreted through Deja’s distinct visual style. Designed as a one-night-only immersive experience, the exhibition extends beyond the artwork. Curated scents, music, and baked goods from local Denver bakeries will transform the space into an over-the-top birthday party atmosphere. Guests are encouraged to dress the part if they’d like!
Cake = Community
At its core, Slices of Fiction explores how food in media becomes shared cultural memories, connecting us through imagination and nostalgia. After nearly two years in development, the concept is finally ready to come to life!
The event will feature a community-driven initiative: guests are invited to bring non-perishable, “birthday-themed” items (cake mix, frosting, candles) to support Foster Fete, an organization dedicated to ensuring children in foster care can celebrate their birthdays.
A “fake cake” auction will also take place, with proceeds going towards supporting the Department of Creative Purposes and its contributions to the Denver creative community.
Meet the Artist!
Hi! I’m Deja Brown!
An illustrator and multi-hyphenate creative driven with a mission to embrace my full creative self and inner child, and hope to inspire others to do the same!
My artwork centers on bold colors, personality, and nostalgia that invite people to feel, remember, and have fun. I began designing professionally in 2016 to support myself through college. What started as a necessity grew into a full-time creative career that I wouldn’t change for anything. I’ve collaborated across a wide range of projects and brands, each shaping my perspective and allowing me to create more authentically and unapologetically. I am committed to building immersive experiences through my creativity that push my work into spaces where people can reconnect with their inner child.
Slices of Fiction is an extension of that intention. It’s not a traditional exhibition, but a one-night experience designed to bring people back to play, whistfulness, and imagination through my imagination.
